Early Period
Samajam Hospital is the first Ayurveda Hospital. Beginning in 1902, Samajam started treatment in Ayurveda both as out-patients as well as in-patients.
The concept of an Ayurveda Hospital was unheard of till the Zamorin of Calicut gave shape and form to Samajam Chikitsalayam, Chikitsalayam meaning where one gets treatment. Samajam was the first ever Ayurveda Hospital to the public. With the Samajam Hospital, and also with its no profit character as a Charitable institution the Zamorin was regarded as the saviour of the poor. This step of Zamorin was considered as one of the major steps in the progress of Ayurveda itself as it gave ample time to the physicians to get an exposure to various kinds of diseases. Till then the Vaidya, the physician, used to visit the patient. This gave little time for the physician to treat more patients as travel alone took a lot of time. Moreover, only the Kings, Dukes, Landlords and the rich got medical care. Zamorin wanted medical and health care to be given to everyone in his practice. Thus the idea of a Public Hospital with OP and IP. The practice of the Vaidya going to the patient thus was changed and got a reverse order with the patient visiting the Vaidya. |

The underlying thread of charity with a proportionate ratio of the wisdom of the legendary physicians, the experience and knowledge of the traditional physicians and also the inherent quality to conceive the contemporary ideas, Samajam still remains head and shoulders above the rest. The qualities of medicines, both traditional as well as proprietary, thus have made Samajam cut an edge over others: not for a few days, or months or years, but for over a century. |

Shoranur
The Hospital and nursing home at Shoranur is the largest centre Samajam has. More over that’s the Head Quarters too. Set on a picturesque location, on the banks of River Nila, today known as Bharatha Puzha, the Shoraur Centre is not just a hospital or nursing home. It is a comprehensive health sanatorium as described in the Charaka Samhitha. Due to its serene atmosphere and also to Samajam’s subtlety in behaviour, the Shoranur Centre attracts quite a lot of people from different parts of India and abroad.
Independent traditional cottages and modern rooms are available here to accommodate patients. Generally, admission is confirmed well in advance and patients stay for a period ranging from 7 days to 21 days, depending on the nature of the illnesses and treatments. In house catering helps the dieting patients.
Since Samajam is a charitable institution, most of the cottages and buildings came to life out of the Philanthropic gesture of some prominent patients. People helped Samajam whole-heartedly, so it could remain a charitable institution to the core even today.
Admission capacity in Shoranur is over 100 and it varies form center to center from 15 to 60 patients at a time. Besides, quite a number of people opt for out-patient status who could come and undertake treatments and go, as and when they wish, in every centre.
As is the tradition in Ayurveda, there’s no rich or poor in Samajam. Samajam sees to it that the poor patients are well attended to in the out-patient and the in-patient departments, free of cost. Every center of Samajam extends this charitable service.

Treatment & Diseases
Ayurveda is a complete health science. It is expanded into 8 specialization some what 2000 year before, where the Kayathanthra deals on internal medicine, the Balathanthra on obstretics, gynecology and paediatism, the Salya thanthra, on surgical management, the Salakya thanthra on eye, ear, nose, throat, brain, head & neck, the Visha thanthra on toxicology, the Rasayana thanthra on immunology, geriatrics and rejuvenation and the Vajeekarana thanthra on andrology and sexology.
The entire spectrum of Ayurveda is applied on two levels –
One for the maintenance of Health and the other for the management of diseases. When Ayurveda is used for maintaining health, it is called as “Swasthavrutham Practices”, where the medicinal preparations, the panchakarma therapies and the food and |
|
regime is employed for containing and curing a disease, it is then called as “ Athuravrutham Practices” where the objective is to manage a disease.
The Swasthavrutham and the Athuravrutham practices of Ayurveda are the two sides of the same coin and often remain complimentary to each other.
According to Ayurveda, many diseases arise as a result of dosha imbalances, so by bringing the doshas back into balance according to your constitutional type, through the use of dietary and lifestyle modifications with the help of Ayurvedic herbs, can result in reduction or elimination of many disease symptoms.
