History
Established a hundred years before, the Keraleeya
Ayurveda Samajam is a singular organization in preserving
and promoting the principles and practices of Ayurvedic
Medicine, internationally. Running on charitable
lines with no profit - no loss motto, the Samajam
today is engaged in Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Dispensaries,
Teaching & Training programmes, Research &
Development activities, Cultivation of medicinal
plants & Manufacture of herbal medicines, Ayurveda
Therapeutics and Rejuvenation Practices, Panchakarma
& related therapies, and most importantly in
Preventive Health Care concepts. Branched out to
7 centers including to the Andamans, the Samajam
caters to the needs of a large population from different
parts of India and abroad.
Beyond commercialization and competition, Samajam
still remains on ethical lines in Medical Practice.
A hundred years before two princely states in Kerala,
the Kochi and the Malabar were always at enmity
and the bone of their contention was the loss of
the 'Perumpadappu Swaroopam' of Kochi to the Zamorins
of Malabar. They never met in peace but in war;
and, a historic exception was made once when they
met, not to discuss any princely or royal matters
but to create an organization to serve the public
on health related matters and, thus formed the Keraleeya
Ayurveda Samajam.

Trust Formation
In 1913, the Samajam was registered as a Charitable
Trust. The first administrative body of the Samajam
decided to open a treatment centre as a hospital
and nursing home institution in Cheruthuruthy, the
central and border point between the two princely
states of Kochi and Malabar. The first ever Hospital
(Kidathi Chikitsa Kendram) in Ayurveda thus came
into existence in a land area of 2.44 acres donated
by the Kochi Royal palace under Rama Varma Appan
Thampuran. And, the hospital structure was later
to house the Central Research Institute on Panchakarma,
of Government of India, Cheruthuruthy, on the southern
banks of the River Nila, popularly known as Bharatha
puzha.
In 1941 Samajam was shifted to the northern banks of the river Bharathapuzha in Shoranur. Since then, the
establishment is popularly known as “Keraleeya
Ayurveda Samajam, Shoranur”.
|
|
Samajam is centrally controlled from its Head Quarters
in Shoranur, in the Palakkad district of Kerala.
Having had the privileged
service of great personalities including Shri. PS

that are to
(1) provide treatments and medicines to the economically
poor, free of cost.

|
|
As regards to its professional strength, Samajam has
ever been fortunate to have the services of the members
of the legendary Ashtavaidya families. It also attracted
the presence of learned physicians of exceptional
skills. A pioneering step by way of setting up the
first ever Chikitsa yogam (panel of physicians) started
soon after the inception of Samajam saw the presence
of 4 Ashtavaidyas, 4 eminent Ayurvedic physicians
and 2 modern medical practitioners.
The first ever panel was chaired by the illustrious
physician, Shri. Thriprangod Parameswaran Mooss who
was at a time requested by the then Madras Governor
to treat the Chief Justice of the British High Court
in Bombay, Sir Basil Scott. Shri Mooss was subsequently
honored by the British government in India by awarding
him the first ever Vaidya Ratna in 1911, by Lord Charles
Hardinge, the then British Viceroy in India, the honorary
title coveted by many in later years.
Ashtavaidya families of Chirattamon, Alathiyoor, Thaikkatt,
Pulamanthol and eminent physicians like Vaidyamatom
Valiya Narayanan Namboodiri, Thirunavaya Mooss, Kuttancherry
Mooss and the like served the Samajam to glory and
new heights.
Samajam still have the presence of physicians of singular
talents like Ashtavaidyan Alathiyoor Nambi, Ashtavaidyan
Thaikkatt E.T. Divakaran Mooss, Vaidya Kalanidhi Prof.
K. Sreedharan Nair, Padmashri. Dr. K. Rajagopalan,
Dr. K. Sankaran MD (Ay) (Former Director - Ayurveda
Medical Education), Dr. KP Muralidharan (Former Pricipal
- Ayurveda College Coimbatore) and Dr. TV Menon (
Former Asst. Director - CRI).
As part of its public awareness Campaign especially
among the Rural population, Samajam organises Ayurveda
Insight Missions. While free check up and medical
advice is given and medicines to the deserving, Samajam
stresses on the agrarian population to grow more herbs
by making them aware of the sustainable, ecological
and cultural importance of Ayurveda in the contemporary
world and also its vast market potential with herbs
and herbal Medicine. |

Today
OLD SCHOOL, NEW GRAMMAR
is the approach Samajam has taken recently as part
of their moral and social duty to reach and teach
the public. The idea is to give modern facility along
with traditional Ayurvedic Treatment, rejuvenating
or therapeutic.
If in 1902, Samajam was formed to extend a helping
hand to the general public of the services of great
physicians by bringing the people to the medical centre,
doing away with the feudal system of the Physician
visiting the patient that too only the rich due to
shortage of time, Samajam now moves a step forward
by going to the patient, rather going to every patient
on cyber. Thus as envisaged by the founders, Samajam
now goes GLOBALLY LOCAL, with consultation available
on line 24 hours.

The legacy
Commercialization has never been in the minds of the
Keraleeya Ayurveda Samajam, it shall never be, too.
Like the lone banyan tree standing on the scorching
sun on the side of the long stretch of road to comfort
the weary traveler, the Samajam stands to comfort
the sick and weak, with the strength gained out of
the 5000 years old heritage wisdom of India, the Ayurveda
of mankind.
Competition has never been in the minds of the Keraleeya
Ayurveda Samajam, it shall never been too. Like the
rain cloud that
|
|
showers over the dry-parched land to spring life on
earth, the Samajam stands well high in the sky to
shower all its knowledge and experience to all who
are in need. There is no bias. There is no ulterior
motives. And, there is nothing that won't be above
board.
The standard and the methodology of Samajam, be it
on conducting treatments or imparting knowledge, be
it on preparing medicines or treating a disease, be
it on introducing innovative programmes or undertaking
research activities, are adopted by many and being
constantly compared by many more.
